Hebrew Language Day 5784: Hebrew – a Language that Connects Us

Hebrew enthusiasts celebrate the language annually on and around 21 Tevet, Eliezer Ben-Yehuda’s birthday, designated Hebrew Language Day; this year the day falls in the first week of January. For 5784 the Academy has tailored its observance of the occasion to the current situation in Israel, under the theme “Hebrew – a Language that Connects Us.”

Words from the Heart – מִלִּים מִן הַלֵּב

AHL, in a joint initiative with the Zionist Council in Israel for Hebrew Language Day, approached 20 people whose lives have been shaken by the war – IDF fighters and police officers, mothers whose children fell in battle or were abducted, displaced adolescents, public figures, doctors, volunteers – and asked each of them to choose a Hebrew word emblematic of this period. Their choices and explanations reflect intense emotions, social engagement, and a sense of solidarity and nationhood; together they capture many feelings shared widely at this time. The submissions, each accompanied by a professional illustration and some background about the author, adorn a set of 20 posters available for free to schools and public institutions.

Hebrew Championship 5784 – אַלִּיפוּת הָעִבְרִית תשפ''ד

As in years past, the Academy is conducting a quiz challenge in which participants compete by quickly answering 20 questions drawn at random from a pool of nearly 1000 questions. The questions span a variety of topics, such as figures of speech, vocabulary, spelling, pointing, and the revival of Hebrew. On Tuesday, January 9, at 12:00 IST, the Academy will declare five winners.

Events at the AHL to Mark Hebrew Language Day

AHL is hosting two events on Friday, January 5, in honor of Hebrew Language Day. The morning program (10:00–11:30), whose two sessions will examine Hebrew names and war songs, has already sold out. The afternoon program (12:30–14:00) features a conversation with beloved poet Agi Mishol and a survey of how Hebrew adapts to changing times. A few tickets remain as of this writing. Additionally, the Academy’s Cultural and Educational Center is offering two free guided tours (the 9:00–9:40 tour still has a few open spots); registration is required.
